The editors liked

The editors didn't like

  • Abstract:  New popup flashThe newest member of the Micro Four Thirds Olympus PEN family is without a doubt the company's best model to date. I was fortunate enough to receive an Olympus PEN E-P3 well before the camera's August release date in order to crank out this...

  • The E-P3 is, in many ways, the camera we always hoped the PEN would be. It addresses the major weaknesses and criticisms of the E-P1 and E-P2, most notably with substantially faster focusing, a much better screen, and the addition of a built-in flash....

  • Solid construction; Built-in flash; Quick touchscreen focus and firing; vibrant and responsive OLED touchscreen; Lots of shooting options;
  • White balance can be hit-and-miss; Poor battery life; High ISO settings are noisy;

  • Top image quality in its range; stylish design on a strong body; lightweight lenses
  • High asking price pushes past some DSLRs

  • Abstract:  Build and Ergonomics Although it retains the traditional styling and build quality of the original PEN cameras, the E-P3's body has been further refined to improve its appearance and handling. It's slightly longer than the E-P2 but marginally thinner, not...

  • Image quality, Build quality, Fun factor
  • Some focus issues, No ISO button, Video could be better
  • Without a doubt, this is one of the most fun cameras we've used on a daily basis. There isn't a high learning curve and what you see on its screen is usually what the camera records. It has extensive colour adjustments, Art filters and scene modes -- basc...

  • We found auto focus to be lightning fast and the touchfocusshoot touch screen to work as well as on the Panasonics. The electronic viewfinder is a revelation — these things don't have to be useless toys.
  • The 40–150mm lens — sold in the two lens $1200 kit — is rough and sticky
  • Olympus has drastically reduced the prices of their micro four thirds cameras and added to their features, making already attractive units even more desirable. The menu system, which has been criticised on earlier Pens, has been beautifully redesigned. No...

  • The Olympus PEN E-P3 is an attractively designed camera that's now one of the fastest in its class
  • Poor video quality and suboptimal default image settings aren't that great, so you really need to shoot raw to get good results at midrange to high ISO sensitivities
  • The E-P3 is the ultimate combination of style and substance. With its gloriously retro chassis and competent image-taking base, we're sold on the new Olympus generation of hybrid cameras....
